Safer Corby Team highlight proxy purchasing message over Easter

Release Date:
Monday, March 29, 2021 - 18:45

Corby Borough Council’s Safer Corby Team are undertaking a public awareness campaign in the run-up to Easter advising of the consequences of buying alcohol for under 18’s.

Proxy purchasing is when an adult attempts to buy age restricted products on behalf of an underage person. This can include alcohol or tobacco. The current legal age in the UK to buy alcohol is 18. Retailers found to be supplying alcohol to minors, including via proxy purchases, could face a fine and/or have their license removed.

Participating retailers include Sainsburys at Priors Hall, Tesco Extra on Charter Court and Euro Express in Corby town centre. Neighbourhood Wardens will be circulating posters to remind customers of the legal consequences of buying alcohol for a minor. Current penalties are a £90 on the spot fine or a criminal record and unlimited fine. Stencilling will also take place outside certain stores as a visual reminder to all customers during the week of 29th March.

The campaign is part of a yearly programme delivered by the Safer Corby Team, aimed at raising awareness of the wider health and social impact of alcohol misuse. The work is supported by the Community Alcohol Partnership, a national organisation aimed at developing a multi-agency approach to tackle under-age drinking across the UK.
