Council Tax - What to Do If Somebody Dies

There are many things to arrange when a loved one dies, we understand this can be difficult and takes time to organise.

For council tax purposes the earlier you contact us after someone dies the sooner we can cancel or amend the council tax due.

If you are the executor of the will, and the property becomes empty. You won’t have to pay council tax until the will is sorted out. If the property stays empty once the will has been sorted out, it will be exempt for another six months. After this time 100% of the full council tax will be charged.

As soon as possible contact us and let us know:

  • the date the person died
  • whether the person who died was the owner or a tenant of the property
  • the name of the executor or solicitors
  • where a property is rented, the date the keys will be returned and who the landlord is

You can give us these details on -line if you have the council tax account number.
