Sustainable Design SPD

The Sustainable Design Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) is intended to provide guidance on policies within the North Northamptonshire Core Spatial Strategy that relate to design and sustainability.  The SPD introduces the principles of "Sustainable Design" (page 11) and incorporates CABE's "Building for Life Standard" in the body of the SPD and as a checklist (Appendix V).

The SPD has four functions. Together, this should not only ensure good design for the future, but should speed up the processing and determination of planning applications.

  • For applicants for planning permission and developers - To provide an understanding of expectations and requirements before preparing planning proposals or purchasing land. To assist in the justification of proposals and appraisal of development schemes and, to ensure any associated costs are considered in the business case for development.
  • For designers - To provide a guide to assist with designing schemes, by clarifying the standards expected. To assist in the preparation of the Sustainable Design and Energy Statements and Design and Access Statements.
  • For development control planners - To provide a systematic method to assist with determining planning applications and provide the basis for evaluating the effectiveness of policies and assist with the preparation of site briefs.
  • Residential developments designed in accordance with this SPD will be well placed to be put forward for accreditation under the Building for Life Standard.

As required in the 'Planning Application: Local Requirements' the SPD and associated checklist (Appendix V) should be used by applicants as the basis for producing a Sustainable Design and Energy Statement to accompany most planning applications (see table A3 on page 8 of the SPD).
