Sustainability

What is Sustainability?

Sustainability generally refers to the capacity to maintain a certain state or process, but is increasingly being used in relation to having a sustainable society or using resources in a sustainable way. When applying the concept of sustainability to all aspects of life on Earth, it is important to note that sustainability does not only relate to the environment, but also to the economic and social contexts. In order for life on Earth to be sustainable, all 3 contexts must be taken into account.

Sustainability and Corby Borough Council

In Corby, our mission is "Working together for the future to improve the quality of life for the people in the Borough" and this would be impossible to achieve without balancing environmental, economic and social aspects, which is why our corporate plan contains themes relating to all three areas.

Corby Borough Council employs a Sustainability Officer to help coordinate some of this work. This Officer is responsible for co-ordinating the development, implementation and monitoring of the Council’s Sustainability Strategy, Climate Change Strategy and Environmental Policy involving all departments of the Council, business sector and sectors of the local community.  The Sustainability Officer has the specific goal of enhancing the environmental performance of the Council and others in securing a sustainable environment for Corby and beyond.

Some of the specific areas that the Sustainability Officer is responsible for are:

    • Energy Efficiency Advice
    • Climate Change Strategy
    • Carbon Management Programme
    • Environmental Policy
    • Affordable Warmth - strategy currently under development
    • Biodiversity

We hope you find the pages in this section useful. The Sustainability Officer can be contacted on 01536 464682 should you require any more information about any of the above.
