Multiple occupancy homes

The Housing Act 2004 has extended the definition of a "House in Multiple Occupation" (HMO) and introduced a Mandatory Licensing Scheme for properties of 3 or more storeys containing 5 persons or more, comprising of more than one household.  If you currently own or manage residential property, which you are letting to tenants, these changes may affect you. This part of the Act came into force in Spring 2006.

All HMOs must be managed in accordance with The Management of Houses in Multiple Occupation (England) Regulations 2006 . The following guide is useful for landlords and managing agents - A Guide to the Management of HMOs.

The Council is constantly identifying HMOs and some of these under the Housing Act 2004 are subject to licensing.
