Heritage

Heritage is all the things that we choose and value when remembering the past. It is what has been inherited from previous generations and that we wish to pass on to future generations. One person’s view of heritage may be different to another’s, but combined provide Corby with a distinctiveness, identity and sense of place.

Heritage can encourage people to use new skills, provide community and leisure opportunities, bring people together and encourage social harmony, and develop a sense of identity, worth and ownership.

Corby Borough Council through the Heritage Development Worker, who is based within the Culture & Leisure Service Area, aim to raise the awareness of the importance and interest of heritage for all in the Borough of Corby. Corby Borough Council will also work to develop and improve access to and the presentation and interpretation of heritage assets throughout the Borough. Access to these records, artefacts and important natural and historical sites will be important for future leisure, local educational and tourism resources in the Borough.

The Corby Borough is both rich and diverse in its archaeological heritage from its early Bronze Age settlements, Iron Age and Roman developments at Weldon Village through to Farming and Forestry, which included Royal Hunting grounds and Rockingham Castle. The story doesn’t stop there but gathers pace with Industrial heritage in abundance, beginning with Iron Age Furnaces later developed by the Romans and again in the 20th Century by entrepreneurs spurred on by the development of the new Manton Railway Line.

Corby Borough Council have established through Heritage Lottery Funding the role of Heritage Development Worker whose aim is to work in and with the Community to assist in the development of heritage projects e.g. Oral History Projects, Archive Projects or any heritage linked themes. The Heritage Development Worker can also visit community groups, schools or clubs interested in their local heritage.

Corby Steelworks

Corby Borough Council holds a number of images and other resources connected to the history of the steelworks in the town. A 2008/9 Learning Links project funded by MLA looked at using this resource to develop teaching and learning activities for pupils at Key stage 2. Working in partnership with the staff and pupils at Woodnewton A Learning Community school a selection of educational resources and activity outlines have been developed.
Using images of the works alongside audio recordings of local residents recalling the atmosphere and importance of the steelworks these activities outline how resources such as oral history accounts and photographs can be used as a stimulus for creative writing and image making.

Although this resource is aimed at young people there is useful information for the interested browser.

Drag Line Bucket part of UK history

Corby is helping to dig up some history as the Borough’s famous Dragline Bucket has been chosen to take part in the BBC’s nationwide campaign to highlight important historical objects, “A History of the World”.

The Drag Line Bucket is one of ten short listed from across the county which are in for a chance to be included in the nationwide campaign. “A History of the World” is a unique partnership between the BBC, the British Museum and 350 museums and institutions across the country. At its heart is a landmark series on BBC Radio 4, A History of the World in 100 Objects, broadcast from Monday 18 January. The listed objects can be found on the BBC Northampton’s website, www.bbc.co.uk/Northampton, and all the objects are on display at the relevant museums.

The Dragline Buckets is symbolic of Corby and Northamptonshire’s steel manufacturing history and was used from 1960 to 1980 . An incredible 5 million tons of Ironstone was extracted a year with the help of the Bucket during its lifespan.
Residents and History buffs can view the Dragline Bucket at East Carlton Country Park Steel Heritage Centre.
