Business rates

Non-domestic rates are another name for business rates

Business rates are a property tax on businesses and other non-domestic properties. Their formal name is national non-domestic rates.

This is the way businesses and other non-domestic properties contribute towards the cost of local authority services.

Non-Domestic property is the term to describe all business property and other properties that are not used solely for domestic purposes, such as houses.

The national rates are set by central government. The revenue is collected by Corby Borough Council, pooled by central government, and then redistributed to local authorities.

A deferral scheme is in place from 01 April 2012. It allows customers to apply in writing for a deferral of the 2012/2013 business rates increase. This allows the customer to spread the increase over 2 years.

Details can be found on the Communities website
