The Freedom of Information Act 2000
The Freedom of Information Act (opens in new window) came into force at the beginning of 2005. It deals with access to official information. Corby Borough Council has a duty to comply with the Freedom of Information Act.
The Act provides individuals or organisations with the right to request information held by the Council.
More guidance on Freedom of Information is available from the Information Commissioner’s Office (opens in new window).
Making Freedom of Information (FOI) Requests
FOI requests refer to official information only . A FOI request normally needs to be received in writing- including by letter or email. If you have difficulty in writing you can telephone to make a request- however, the Council will write to you with a summary of the request and this must be verified and confirmed by the applicant before the request can be considered.
To make a request under the Freedom of Information Act you can complete an on-line request form (opens in new window) or you can contact the FOI Officer using the below contact address and telephone number:
The Council has a duty to respond to any reasonable request for information within 20 working days of receipt of the request. Certain exemptions may apply. If the request for information is covered by the Council’s publication scheme the applicant will be redirected to this.
The Council is not required to respond to a request if the applicant does not provide enough information to let it identify, locate or retrieve the information requested. However, the Council has a duty to offer advice or assistance to the applicant and where possible will provide guidance in clarifying a request for information.
Council Publication Scheme
The Council also issues a publication scheme in accordance with the Act. This document commits the Council to make certain information available, and is a guide on how to access it. For more details please click here (opens in new window).
Where a FOI request asks for information which is routinely provided through the publication scheme, this will be rejected and the applicant will be directed to the publication scheme.
