FAQs
Question

Housing benefit does not cover my full rent and I can't afford to make it up. Is there anything further I can claim?

Answer

Authorities have a discretion to increase benefit, in individual exceptional circumstances, up to the level of rent the claimant is charged. Discretionary Housing Payments are funded from a separate 'pot' of money which is limited, therefore, each request is considered on its own merits.

Payments may be made where the shortfall in rent is due to
* The rent officer restricting the rent and it would cause exceptional hardship for the claimant to make up the difference.

* Housing Benefit has been reduced due to a hospital stay or where a non-dependent has joined the household and is unable to contribute to the rent.
